Environmental Management Systems BS 14001

Environmental issues are becoming a major concern of customers and clients. They are looking to do business with "Environmentally Friendly" suppliers who supply not just an acceptable product or service at the right price, but do it with minimum impact on the environment. More and more legislation is being introduced to make organisations protect the environment - Packaging Waste, EEW to name but two.

Failure to comply with this legislation put the business at risk of alienating customers together with the potential for prosecutions and fines.

Addressing environmental issues can provide a financial benefit, in addition to reducing the risk of fines, reducing waste (energy, water, landfill costs etc.) has a direct impact on the profitability of the company.

The risks and benefits associated with addressing environmental issues can be controlled by the implementation of an Environmental Management System. An International standard for environmental management has been published - BS 14001. This standard is starting to have a high take-up world wide as organisations recognise the need to address environmental issues, and also to be seen to be addressing them.

A combined Certification of the Management System to ISO 9001, OSH 180001 and BS 14001 is now possible from a number of certification bodies.
